Blue Tomato Seeds

Fancy growing blue tomatoes in your garden next year?

Plant breeder Tom Wagner has been working the last few years on a few different lines of blue tomatoes.  These are breed using traditional techniques, and are completely natural.  He has some extra seeds to share with interested gardeners who would like to buy them, try them and report back to him on their experiences.

More information can be found in this article in the Christian Science Monitor blog.

  1. Hi Chidy,

Not flavor. I think some of Tom’s tomatoes taste good, but many of the earlier blue tomatoes didn’t taste good.

Yes show. There are white, red, orange, purple, yellow, stripes and so on, but until now no blue. Blue is a surprisingly nice color for a tomato.

Blue fruit has more anthocyanins than other colors. This is an anti-oxident and is believed to be very healthy. Our ancestors ate a lot more blue fruits and vegetables than we do, and it’s believed this is an important reason why what they ate is healthier than modern foods.

The blue color protects tomatoes from sunscald. For those of us growing tomatoes in places where the ozone layer is thin, this is very important and means we don’t have to do other things to protect the tomatoes.

  2. Hi,
Would like to buy a few seeds of the blue variety’s if possible. Avid planter here…lolol. Mostly heritage. Just started my late variety’s today…last year lost most to late blight, so starting earlier for early production. Hope all is well and hoping to hear from you soon. thanks!

  6. Hi Allison,

I’m afraid I don’t have any spare seeds, but you might try newworldcrops or just have a look around the internet. There are lots of other people with blue tomato seeds by now, I’m sure you can find someone…
