Passing of Kent Whealy

I received an email today with the sad news that Kent Whealy passed away last week.  Kent founded the Seed Savers Exchange in 1975, and ran it for 33 years.  He envisioned and supervised the development of Heritage Farm and Twin Valleys at SSE.  He created all of the SSE publications, including the well known Garden Seed Inventories.  His awards included a MacArthur Fellowship and a N. I. Vavilov medal from the Vavilov Institute in St. Petersburg.

The email mentioned he supported many food and conservation programs in Hawaii, where he spent winters in a house he and his wife Judy owned near Hilo.

He was a private person, and I wasn’t in contact with him.  Please leave a comment if you have anything else to share.

Humbolt County GMO Campaign

Humbolt County, CA banned cultivation of GMOs in 2014 with Proposition P.  Below are some videos from this campaign.  They are pretty long, and I haven’t watched all of them myself.  I also haven’t tried publishing videos in exactly this way before.  If you notice anything like incorrect titles, corrupted files or anything else, please let me know!

Solstice Seeds 2018 Catalogue

You can download the 2018 Solstice Seeds catalogue here.

I’ve seen several people searching for the new catalogue in my log files, so I know it’s much anticipated.

Lots of interesting varieties this year.  This is the first year the seeds are offered by Brian Stroffolino, after many years of being offered by Brian’s neighbor Sylvia Davatz.  It’s great the collection was picked up by Brian and will still be available.

Anpetu Oihankesni

I just received word that Anpetu, an avid seedsaver, passed away this last August, 2017.  He was the proprietor of Sourcepoint Seeds.

Although it’s aways a sad and complex situation when a seedsaver passes away, I honestly didn’t know Anpetu personally.  I only knew of his name.  I can’t really say anything about him here.

If anyone has comments, please leave them below.  If you have concerns about his seed collection, or perhaps outstanding orders, please either contact George Stevens directly, or me for George’s contact information.
