Tonopah Rob’s Vegetable Farm

I always like to draw attention to both new gardening/farming related blogs as well as local businesses. Tonopah Rob’s Vegetable Farm is both. Both his farm and his own vegetable stand are located just outside of Phoenix, Arizona. His emphasis is 100% natural farming (better than organic), together with interesting vegetable varieties and good prices. As well as direct sale of vegetables, he also offers a CSA plan where you buy vegetables in advance at a discount.

If you live in or near Phoenix, I would say his vegetable stand would be worth a visit. As I understand it, he also gives tours of his farm.

For the rest of us, he is a new face to welcome to the blogging community.

Let Them Eat Windows

Jeremy of the Agricultural Biodiversity Weblog made two posts recently about the Bill and Melinda Gates foundations decision to dramatically increase the amount of money they give to support agriculture in some of the worlds poorest countries. Jeremy’s posts are here and here.

Two somewhat conflicting articles can be found in the New York Times and The Seattle Post.

One thing is for sure, the Gates Foundation looks set to have a big influence on how agriculture is developed in many parts of the world. It also seems likely many of us will take issue with how this unfolds.

Will this aid emphasize new technologies like GM varieties, high input systems requiring large amounts of energy, pesticides and nitrogen based fertilizers? Will it emphasize sustainable local food systems or export crops? Will it seek to relieve poverty, or simply drive farmers into cycles of debt and dependence on corporate products?

Seed Saving Blog

It’s funny sometimes how you can not notice a fellow blogger for months or years, then suddenly come across them. That’s what happened here.

Laura of Mas Du Diable just left a comment here. She is located in Southern France, and her blog has been around almost as long as Bifurcated Carrots!

She lives in a really pretty place, and has lots of great pictures on her site.

She has a list of seeds to trade, and in particular is looking for hot peppers.
