Persian Star Garlic

Persian Star Garlic

This garlic is Purple Stripe type.

You might be wondering where the purple color is on this purple stripe garlic, me too! This is a very bizzare garlic. This is my second year growing it, and last year it had very nice purple stripes on the skin. I’m pretty sure the cloves also had a bit of color. This year it’s bone white.

I would think I was going crazy, but fortunately I have proof to the contrary. Last year I gave Rebsie from the Daughter of the soil a bulb, and she noticed the same thing! Last year it had purple stripes, and this year it’s bone white.

In spite of it’s changing colors, this is a nice garlic that grows well and has a nice taste. That is if the taste isn’t changing too.

Vekak Czech Garlic

Vekak Czech Garlic

This is a Glazed Purple Stripe type.

Last year this was a much more colorful garlic. Sometimes I come across cloves with colors so intense, they remind me of the stained glass in the cathedral in Prague. Purple/Red are the main colors, but sometimes hues of yellow and other colors emerge. The taste of this garlic is very good.

Last year was the first year growing this garlic, and for a while I didn’t think it was going to make it. The plants were weak, and the few resulting bulbs almost weren’t enough for replanting. This year it’s really taken off, and I think it’s long term prognosis is very good. Assuming it keeps going in my garden, I think this will turn into a very high quality garlic.

Chesnok Red Garlic

Chesnok Red Garlic

This garlic is a Purple Stripe type.

You may be wonder where the ‘red’ in the name of this garlic comes from. Me too! Last year there was a little bit of red in the cloves, but this year they look mostly white to me.

This garlic comes from the former Soviet republic of Georgia. Did I mention how much I like the garlics from Georgia? This is really another very high quality garlic from there. The bulbs are always a bit small, even the planting stock I originally got was small. The cloves are a reasonable size for cooking with, and the plants are productive, so the small bulb size is not very important in my opinion. In fact I think the small bulbs are very attractive and practical in their own way. These bulbs store well, and the taste is very good.
