You cannot buy a bulb solo in the Netherlands?! I guess it’s like trying to buy one piece of coal in Newcastle in it’s heyday.
I love the individual paper labels on the bulbs on ~xfer’s page.
I guess there must be somewhere you can buy tulip bulbs one at a time, probably flea markets or whatever.
You would never find a garden center here going to so much trouble to sell them one at a time! Normal package size here is about 8 bulbs, for the equivalent of about $4 I think. Sometimes you can buy large bags of simple varieties for about half that price per bulb.
There was a time here when people traded their houses for a single tulip bulb!

‘The Tulip: The Story of a Flower That Has Made Men Mad’ by Anna Pavord is a book I have read in part. It must not have grabbed me & I wandered off to another book amongst my shelves.
I think there’s a Tulipmania title too..probably many titles..
The nice customer service is one thing i love about japan, they get everything ready for you. I can’t imagine how tedious it is to put the label on each one of the bulbs.
PS: Thanks a lot for this post!
Hi ~fer,
Thanks for making your original post! It’s always fun to see how things are someplace else. I think some others who read this blog enjoyed your post too!
In some parts of Japan a flour is made of them.
