After heavy rains, Late Blight appeared in my garden yesterday. My tomatoes were an immediate and near total loss, but I’m getting used to that and didn’t plant many this year. My potatoes are still untouched, but I’m sure they too will be infected within a matter of days.
Anyone else have new outbreaks of blight?
Not yet in Normandy but I’m expecting it soon. The potatoes will have their foliage stripped this week. It’s more difficult with the tomatoes but it’s such a potentially large crop I may use Bordeaux mixture again tomorrow.
You lucky blighters – we’ve had it here in Cornwall for weeks. Having shown a slight reduction in virulence lately , it is now cutting a swathe through what remains of the outdoor tomatoes. I wish you the best of luck with Blue 13, Pink 6 or whatever other strains you have over on the mainland.
It seems more virulent to me than last year. The tomato I grew last year that showed a lot of resistance, Tomatito de Jalapa, already has small lesions on the leaves. All my other tomatoes were pretty much a write-off on the first day. Nothing significant yet on the potatoes…
I’m afraid to say that Tomatito de Jalapa proved not to be resistant here last year. I expect the breakdown in resistance we experienced in 2009 has now reached you. Damn shame.
Apparently 95% of the blight in the UK is a relatively new strain, Blue 13, which is particularly virulent. Varieties which were partially resistant to older strains are as susceptible as any. That explains why we get outbreaks on my allotment site as soon as we get a drop of summer rain.
