10 Replies to “Siberian Garlic”

  1. Hi:

Thanks VERY much for the pics here Patrick. They have helped me, :).

I have extra Siberian that I purchased from Territorial Seed Co. this month. I bought a pound expecting, at most, 8 bulbs but hoping for 4|5, which would be good “commercial” seed stock. They advertise 35-40 cloves per pound.
They sent 19(NINETEEN) small bulbs! I have no place for that many small seeds(over 100!).

It is small but will be suitable for a “home” garden. I’ll part with 5 -10 which would be ~ 30-40 cloves per 5 bulbs.

And BTW Territorial Seed Co. is to be avoided. They ripped me off on other G. seed as well…

  2. Hi Ric,

Thanks for the nice words, and I’m glad the picture helped. I mentioned in another post one of the reasons I was posting so many pictures of different garlics is I see there aren’t many around on the Internet.

Remember the appearance of garlic can change quite a bit from one year to the next, and depends very much on the climate in which it was grown.

I will send Tom an email, and if he agrees I’ll forward his email address to you so you can get in touch about the garlic.

  3. Hi Patrick,

That’s fine about the email. I don’t care one way or the other, you understand. If he doesn’t want them I’ll put ’em somewhere and just have LOTS of Siberian to eat(if they grow…). That’s not a bad thing, :).

Yes that’s a good point about color variation. I know it(color) can change and does somewhat, even on the same garlic from the same patch. But one should be able to recognize the garlic as possibly being XYZ cultivar. …

What color are the Chinese Pink bulbs when you dig them? Are they completely white or do they have splotches of pinkish purple? Are the cloves also completely off-white or pinkish? Are the bulbs flattened or teardrop?
The ones from TSC are white and flat. They look like garlic I bought at the store a couple of weeks ago. They look like Cal. Early or Late. The roots have all been shaved off as if they were going to a store …or came from a store.
I ordered five cultivars … and paid full price to Territorial Seed Co. Not a single bulb is close to half-size of a “good” bulb. E.g., Chesnok Red had ten(10) bulbs in *one-half* pound from TSC. A full pound of good quality s/b ~ 6 bulbs and that is what TSC advertises: ” Cloves per head: 9-11. Cloves per pound: 54-60″. A half-pound should have been no more than 3 or 4.

OTOH, Seeds of Change and Peaceful Valley(PVFS) both sent good seed stock. Not “great” but good enough to plant and expect decent to large sized bulbs.
The Persian Star, Shantung Purple, Music, Korean Shilla and Chesnok Red are all, more or less, as expected. ( A full pound of Chesnok Red from PVFS had 9 bulbs. More than I hoped but still less than half-pound from TSC! )

I wrote to TSC. I don’t think there is anything they can do. Garlic “buying” season is over … everyone is sold-out of (almost) every cultivar.

  4. Terri from HRG just sent an email to point out that they have a new photo on their home page of Siberian and Susanville garlic.
    http://www.hoodrivergarlic.com/images/photos/garlic-pumpkin.jpg

It’s at least twice the size of what TSC sent me for the Sib. … which, BTW, I can no longer sell|trade. TSC agreed to take the, er, um, ‘stuff’ back and refund the money. I am still at a negative for that whole experience …days wasted, plans twisted, project now without a Rocambole. Grrrrr.

But thanks to the photos here, in particular, as well as other research I was able to positively identify that it was not just in my mind. So thanks again!

I got some Susanville too to replace the Inchelium Red. It’s as close as I could get to I.R. and the bulbs are promised to be nearly twice as big …
Oh, yea, in case you(or anyone, like me) missed getting some “Italian” garlic, HRG is selling some smaller bulbs of Early Italian Red at a discount. I got some of that just for fun … =consumption. Yum. Makes my mouth water.

  5. Just to finish this off, in case someone is wondering if the promise was as good as the delivery, the order placed Thursday night from Hood River Garlic was sent USPS on Sat and arrived today. That’s fast… both the shipping-from and delivery-to.

The bulbs are FANTASTIC! Huge, obviously properly cured and trimmed and beautiful too, like the picture.

Even the as-promised “smaller” Italian Red are bigger than what Territorial Seed Company sent me for Siberian. Siberian are normally twice as big … and _are_ in the order from Hood River Garlic.

Packaging was good & simple: paper and more paper to make it well padded, most of it recycled or can be – even the box, minus the tape. Good stewardship …

I’ll buy from them again when needed. It’s clear that they love their garlic and the people that buy it.
Right now I’m going to slice some Early Italian Red for a pizza that I have been craving for weeks…

Best of luck to you “Pat ‘n’ Steph” in that new garden …and thanks again for those pics.

  6. I ordered Inchelium Red garlic from Territorial Seed Co.. It is supposed to have 45 to 65 cloves per pound. At an average of 10 cloves per bulb that would be about 6 bulbs per pound. Instead, I received 3 pounds with 16 to 18 bulbs per pound. The bulbs are small and with shipping I paid $20 a pound. I am very disappointed and am especially disappointed to read that the same thing happened to Ric.

  7. Just an update on my experience with Territorial Seed. I talked with them on October 28 and they have resolved my problem. They were quick to acknowledge the mistake. That being said, I would do business with them again.
