For me these were the most anticipated potato of the season. This is not an heirloom variety, but rather a modern one. It’s even available for purchase in local supermarkets. It came highly recommended by John at Spade Work. In fact John sent me some seed potatoes for this variety, but alas I didn’t have my act together at the time to get them planted before they rotted (they had already been suffering from a winter in storage). Other people have been growing this potato and commenting on it’s high quality.
Mostly I wasn’t disappointed. This was a really nice tasting potato! Like John said this is a waxy salad like potato.
At the same time, I was a little disappointed. It tasted a bit too much like the commercial variety it was. Except for being garden fresh, and tasting great for this reason, it did taste a bit like how I would expect a supermarket potato to taste. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it’s just a matter of what you expect really.
Too bad you didn’t get those planted. We planted garbage can potatoes this year. MUCH easier than the standard way, even if we didn’t get it totally right the first time. Take a look on BB to see!

Hi Robin,
Thanks for the comment and for stopping by.
What was I thinking when I wrote this, it wasn’t clear at all! I meant to say John sent me some tubers that rotted before I planted them, so then had to go out and buy some more. I did grow the potatoes in the picture in my garden this year.
You’re reminded me that soon I’ll be able to harvest my potatoes! I look forward to tasting them! This I tried the purple ones for the mashed potatoes.
I think someone’s trying to make fun of me here…
Hi Patrick,
A pity the first set of tubers rotted! I wonder if they tasted like what you’d expect a supermarket potato to taste like because they came from one!? I must say that my Charlottes have a superlative nutty taste far superior to anything you can buy!!!!
Best wishes
John
Hi John, I believe you! There are a lot of other people who grow and love them. In fact almost everyone I know who grows potatoes grows them too. The Charlotte potatoes were nice, only I thought the other potatoes I grew at the same time were more interesting.
I didn’t plant the tubers you sent me. If I had planted them right away instead of worrying over if I should chit them or if it was warm enough outside, they would have been fine. I just didn’t have the pots of dirt in place, and didn’t do it in time.
I saved some seed from the Charlottes. Maybe I will try to grow some next year, and see what I get…
