Lathyrus tuberosus (Tuberous Pea)

For the second time in a year, my friend Elzo from the Wieringer Akker gave me some of these tubers.  Apparently for him they do very well.  They are a nitrogen fixing perennial tuber, that’s supposed to be very hardy in our climate.

The first time Elzo gave me some of these tubers, I killed them with neglect.  He assures me this is a very difficult thing to do, but I succeeded.

The advice Elzo gave was because the tubers can grow very deep in the ground, it’s easier to harvest if you grow them in a container.  This is what I have, a plastic tub buried in a corner of my garden.

  1. I’m also trying these for the first time. I hadn’t heard the thing about them going deep, but we’ll see.

  2. Delicious to eat – just ask any of the passing slugs that defoliate my plants without fail every year. Glad to hear people are growing this plant. It is certainly worth developing as a crop.

  3. Hi Dylan,

It’s nice to hear from you again.

Maybe someone else has some they could send for free, but Elzo who gave me these has them listed for sale on his website. It’s in Dutch, so maybe hard to read, but he’s asking €2,50. It’s not very clear on what the shipping costs are, but in any case he might want a little more to send to the UK.

He has a contact form here on his website, the 3 fields to fill in are name, email address and subject, then your message goes on the bottom.

Elzo speaks perfect English, so don’t worry about leaving a message in English, it won’t be a problem.

I’m also going to send you an email about this.
